Olivia Chang, M.D.
Olivia Chang, MD, MPH, FACOG, is fellowship-trained and board-certified in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery /OB/GYN and she is a gender affirming surgeon. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Urology and the Chief of Female Urology, Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery and Voiding Dysfunction in the Department of Urology at UC Irvine. She received her medical doctor degree from Tulane University. She completed her OB/GYN residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School followed by a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Prior to joining UC-Irvine, Dr. Chang was an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington at the Pelvic Health Center.
Dr. Chang is committed to ensuring that all patients have access to high-quality treatment for pelvic organ prolapse, urinary issues, and those with congenital or acquired conditions that require vaginal reconstruction. When patients see her in the office, they will be welcomed with kindness and patience. It can feel isolating to have pelvic floor disorders, so she takes the time to ensure they are educated on their condition and the treatment options. Her goal is to help them overcome these conditions and help them live the life that they want. She believes in individualized, patient-centered care. She will work closely with every patient to identify the problems, and offer evidence-based solutions based on their wishes.
She has extensive non-surgical and surgical training for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. She offers surgical vs non-surgical options and mesh vs non-mesh options for treatment. In addition, she provides uterine-preservation prolapse surgeries (no-hysterectomy) in addition to hysterectomy at the time of prolapse procedures. Her surgical repertoire is expansive, she is able to perform surgeries of all modalities – vaginal, laparoscopic or robotic surgeries.
Because of her training, she can offer her patients a treatment plan that is consistent with their goals. She also has extensive experience in complex vaginal reconstruction for congenital anomalies (vaginal agenesis, vaginal septum), radiation complications, as well as complex vesicovaginal fistula (bladder fistula) or rectovaginal fistula. She provides gender affirming surgeries for transgender patients including gender-affirming hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, vaginectomy and vaginoplasties (penile inversion and peritoneal pullthrough). She is also trained to provide complex vaginal reconstruction with the use of myocutaneous (skin/muscle) flaps.
She is a prolific researcher with over 50 publications to date focused on surgical outcomes after pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and fistula surgeries, and with the use of cost-effectiveness analysis. She has a focused interest on uterine-preserving surgeries and the analysis on the impact of hysterectomy on pelvic floor disorders.
